Neuralink And The Brain’s Magical Future| Elon Musk

-Sreemeenakshi V

Before diving straight into the subject, we must first get familiar with this great person here, Elon Musk.

Elon Reeve Musk was born in South- African and became an American entrepreneur and a Business magnet. He is known as the founder of Tesla Motors and SpaceX and also the co-founder of Neuralink and Open AI.. SpaceX launched a landmark commercial spacecraft in 2012.

Neuralink

In 2016, Musk co-founded Neuralink, which is a neurotechnology startup company that aimed at integrating the human brain with AI. Neuralink’s main purpose is to make devices that can be embedded in the human brains to facilitate the merging of the brain with machines. The devices will also continuously get restored with the latest improvements in artificial intelligence to stay updated. Such improvements could both enhance the memory and also allow the devices to communicate more effectively with the software.

At a live demonstration which was held on August 2020, Musk described one of their early devices as “a Fitbit in your skull” that could soon be able to cure paralysis, deafness, blindness, and other disabilities but on the other hand, many neuroscientists and publications criticized these claims.

When Musk appeared at the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, he briefly talked about Neuralink and its infinite possibilities and applications. When he was asked about the possible brain chip that could redefine the way in which humans communicate, Musk explained how the brain chip is intended to work, and its immense potential in creating a universal language.

Musk also added that the Neuralink could interpret the language a human speaks within a period of five to ten years successfully.

Neuralink isn’t the first neurotech to believe that brain implants could help in extending and restoring human capabilities. Researchers, in this subject began placing probes in the brains of paralyzed people in the late 1990s itself in order to show that signals could let them move Robot arms or computer cursors and that mice with visual implants could really perceive infrared rays.

Musk always avoided questions that asked for the schedule about when Neuralink’s system is going to be tested on humans. This of course is not an easy question to answer as even after four years of its formation, Neuralink has provided no evidence that it can treat depression, insomnia, or a dozen other diseases evidently.

So why has this news spread before it had actually gone through these tests? It is primarily to stir excitement and to recruit more engineers for the upcoming processes, which has also helped the rise of stocks of the electric car maker Tesla.

Computer chips in pig’s brain

Primarily, Musk unveiled the pig, Gertrude which had a coin-sized computer chip in its brain for about two months which was showed as an early step towards the goal of curing human diseases with the similar type of implant.

What does Neuralink do?

Neuralink may eventually be able to capture the instant thoughts that we have and transcribe them into instant communication, faster than the words can leave your mouth.

Neuralink involves the process of surgically implanting some components onto the surface of your brain. Neuralink uses the electrodes that are implanted in the brain to detect when nerves are sending messages to each other. This is possible because Electrodes are devices that are used to detect electric fields and electric fields occurs when nerves send messages to one another.

The electrodes, along with a small receiver, will be fitted underneath the skull of a person. One of the Electrodes gets placed right on the neuron to capture electric fields when a neuron passes its signal or message and the other Electrode gets placed around 60 nanometers away from the first electrode where it could no longer detect the neuron’s electrical signal.

Purpose of Neuralink

The Neuralink’s chip is roughly about 23 millimeters (0.9 inch) in diameter.

The link, which is called as the chip gets wirelessly connected to the brain, to the digital world, starting by connecting to a smart phone. The resulting computing power, according to Musk, will allow humans to get competitive with the rapidly developing AI.

Neuralink’s Goal

Neuralink aims at building an incredibly powerful brain-machine interface, that is, a device with the power to handle lots of data, and that which can be inserted in a relatively simple surgery.

Its short term goal is to build a device that can help people with any specific health conditions.

Its long term goal or the main goal is to compete or even surpass Artificial Intelligence and it aims at developing the technology for human enhancement.
